Ian Wright wowed by Chelsea player's international display yesterday

Chelsea youngster Billy Gilmour earned the praise of Ian Wright following his fine performance for Scotland last night.

Speaking on ITV, Wright was marvelling at Gilmour’s display for his national side yesterday evening.

Scotland edged past Luxembourg 1-0 in their final friendly fixture before the European Championship begins.

Gilmour was introduced at half time and looked typically assured amongst his senior teammates.

His case to be a starter against the Czech Republic in a weeks’ time won’t have been harmed in the slightest.

The only blip for Chelsea’s teenage talent was that he had to be removed after 30 minutes, after taking a hefty Luxembourg challenge.

Thankfully for the 19-year-old and Scotland, Steve Clarke confirmed the injury was nothing serious.

Gilmour grabs attention

Despite only being on the pitch for half an hour, Wright was left very impressed by Gilmour’s contribution.

“Brilliant, in respect of his one touch play,” said the former Arsenal striker.

“Very composed on the ball. Can run with the ball.

“Every time I’ve seen him play (for Chelsea), it’s been in that holding midfield. In this game, they were trying to get him forward.

“He’s got a lot of ability about him. He’s a very good player.”

Flying Scotsman

Sunday’s victory was only Gilmour’s second senior Scottish cap, as he looks to build a head of steam before the Euros.

It is momentum carried through from his Chelsea campaign, where he had just been crowned a Champions League winner.

This summer could be huge for the miniature midfielder, not just from a national standpoint, but a chance to show Thomas Tuchel he belongs with the Blues.
