Chelsea’s two most dangerous players don’t get in Thomas Tuchel’s team

Chelsea have struggled for goals this season, especially since Thomas Tuchel took over.

The German coach has introduced an interesting 343 system which has made us immensely strong defensively, but has made us a little stodgy going forward.

FBRef’s stats show that our two most dangerous players this season, in terms of expected goals and assists per 90 minutes, without penalties, are Olivier Giroud and Tammy Abraham.

Neither is in Thomas Tuchel’s first team, or even in the second string most of the time. Giroud plays occasionally as a sub, Tammy doesn’t play at all.

There’s nothing wrong with that necessarily, and if Timo Werner would score a few of the chances that come his way it wouldn’t look so bleak. But every time we fail to score it looks a strange decision.

But it’s an interesting thing to think about as we approach a Champions League final where drawing a blank would likely be fatal for our chances.
